The Little Tramp rescues an orphan from the streets and raises him as his own. Chaplin and Jackie Coogan make a miraculous pair in this clever and innovative marriage of sentiment and slapstick, a story of pancakes, fistfights, and dodging social services and policemen – as the opening title card says, “a picture with a smile - and perhaps a tear.” An instant success in 1921, The Kid remains a masterwork of cinema.

Director: Erich von Stroheim

Screenplay: Erich von Stroheim

Rightfully proclaimed the ‘first million-dollar movie’ to come out of Hollywood, this masterpiece was directed by and starred Erich von Stroheim. A trio of Russian con artists take a luxurious villa above Monte Carlo to prey on wealthy vacationers in this European playground of postwar decadence. Stroheim stars as the fraudulent Count Karazmin, who targets moneyed women to blackmail them with the help of “cousins” Mae Busch and Maud George. The opulent sets—with the California coast standing in for Monaco—shine in this glorious restoration by MoMA and SFSFF in 2020.

No single complete copy of the release version of Erich von Stroheim’s film survives. What does survive are a tinted-and-toned 35mm nitrate print with Italian intertitles from Cineteca Italiana of Milan and, from New York’s Museum of Modern Art, a 35mm black-and-white print of an unreleased re-edited and re-titled version created in 1928 by Universal for a never-realized sound release. Available documentation was invaluable in the reconstruction of the film, and it included the script for an eight-reel version and, from the Library of Congress, a copy of Sigmund Romberg’s piano score, whose musical cues helped reconstruct the film’s sequencing and title content. To reproduce the tinting and toning the team relied on the coloring conventions of Universal films of the period. For the spectacular hand-colored effects the team used contemporary reviews and a trade press article written by the original colorist Gustav Brock.

After seeing the double bill of Foolish Wives and Human Heart in 1923, Tuan Yawaprapas, the editor of the first Thai film magazine, Papayon Siam, proclaimed that the success of these two films are “as significant as Buddha’s triumph over evil.”

The Brilliant Biograph: Earliest Moving Images of Europe (1897-1902)

2020 / 52 min

Production Company: EYE Filmmuseum, BFI National Archive
Print Source: EYE Filmmuseum

The Mutoscope and Biograph Collection is the oldest film collection held at EYE Filmmuseum. It includes over 200 films, most of which were made in Europe between 1897 and 1902. This constitutes the largest existing collection of Mutoscope and Biograph films surviving in the world.

These films are all photographed with the unique large-format 68mm Mutograph camera, which provided extraordinarily high-resolution images. These one-minute time capsules from 120 years ago still convey some of the richest and sharpest images that film can achieve.

The films reflect the essence of early cinema: capturing the first-ever moving images of important events, famous locations and personalities, as well as spectacular moments such as dance and sports performances, or even natural phenomena like fire or storm, that only work when seen in motion.

EYE Filmmuseum appreciates the funding from the European Commission’s “European Tribute to Film Heritage” program, which allowed digitizing 50 selected films from the EYE and BFI collections, in high quality (8K).

Symphony No. 2, Eroica and 5th Symphonies, Fidelio

With the great character actor Fritz Kortner (1892-1970) in the title role, the film traces the most important stages in the life of Ludwig van Beethoven and links his life with his great works such as the 2nd Symphony, Eroica, 5th and 9th Symphonies, Fidelio and Missa Solemnis. The film was produced on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the composer's death (March 23, 1927) and is a fine example of early media exploitation of popular artist biographies. It was made in the summer of 1926 in the Listo Film Studios in Vienna-Schönbrunn and had its cinema premiere on 18 February 1927. The contemporary Austrian press noted as a special quality that the film was made on original locations, which can only mean Schönbrunn Palace.

The restored version comes from the Filmarchiv Austria and is the French export version. This French version, shortened by 10 minutes, is the only surviving version of the film. The lost original version with the subtitle 'In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the death of the singer of eternity' had a length of 80 minutes and went into more detail about the works of the major creative phase (5th and 9th symphonies).

An old organist involuntarily becomes a witness to a suicide of an unknown man. Before he dies he gives a packet with money in it for his daughter who is living in a convent. The organist does not report this case to the authorities but, instead, hides the body in the cellar. He does not know, however, that his actions are being observed by his spineless neighbour, a shoe-polisher who later blackmails him threatening to tell the authorities that he had committed a murder.

One of the most important silent films to come out of Eastern Europe in the 1920s, the film was directed by Martin Fric, from the scenario by poet Vitezslav Nezval and Vaclav Wasserman.

Fragment of an Empire

Fragment of an Empire, Ermler’s last silent feature, which Denise J. Youngblood considers “the most important film in Soviet silent cinema” is little known and woefully under-appreciated today. That paragon of Soviet film scholarship Jay Leyda called it “a model of realism, presented without any sophistication, almost as if Ermler were telling a parable, though its technique recalls both Eisenstein and Dovzhenko.”

The story concerns a young man, Filimonov, drafted into the tsar’s army during World War I, who becomes a total amnesiac due to shell shock. He begins to regain his memory a few years later and is at pains to understand what happened as his country has been thoroughly transformed by the Bolshevik Revolution of October 1917.

Based primarily on a 35mm print held at EYE Filmmuseum in Amsterdam, this restoration of Fragment of an Empire is supplemented with a 35mm nitrate print from the Swiss Cinémathèque, which provided the original Russian intertitles for Acts 2–6 as well as a small number of shots missing from the primary source. Titles absent from the Swiss print have been reproduced based on Russian censor records and are identified with the notation “2018” in the lower right corner. A partnership between EYE Filmmuseum, Gosfilmofond of Russia, and the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, the restoration also received funding from Rick Andersen and John and Susan Sinnott. It would not have been possible without the perseverance and meticulous scholarship of archivist Peter Bagrov.
