Ghazi Alqudcy and Ezzam Rahman’s wry and satirical tone documentary film Forgotten Merlion, 2009, pieces together several Singaporeans’ (all loyal citizens, no doubt) fumbled attempts at reciting the Singapore national anthem, Majulah Singapura (Onward Singapore) which was composed in the official language of Malay by the late Zubir Said in 1958. The film portrays the slow ebb of this vernacular language, as both speakers and non-speakers of Malay stumble bashfully then fall painfully silent through mangled pronunciations of the lyrics.
